Any req (though keep in mind you'll only get half the AL if you don't meet the req), then +30 fort handle. Then you want as many +10 armor vs X as possible.

So fire, earth, cold, water, slashing, piercing, blunt. A reduce cripple is a good idea too. Some people like a reduced dazed shield too. So yeah, lots of shields, armor mods, fort mods. All good. Then swap them around based on what's hitting you.

Personally i think monk shields arent that great, at the end of the day you need energy and casting/recharge times for monking and i love having a +1 healing chance :P.

The way i see it is, unless you are farming as a tank you should stay out of the way and let others take the hits for you - being squishy is what monking is about :P

swapping swapping swapping, you start on shield and swap if you need more energy

I always use a shield as my standard weaponslot and slots 2 - 4 each have a higher energy output on my ele.

But being squishy is so much more fun :P Swapping maybe key but carrying all those extra shields around just so you're prepared for everything is SO much more effort compared to learning how to monk effectively by staying out of the line of fire . I just like being old school, and having shiney staffs and wands... ooof.... glowy

I am wondering if there is a list of non-attr requiring shields? and if so, can they be inscriped, or have a shield handle attached to them?

It's possible to get shields with no attribute requirement, but they won't be any better than using a max shield and not meeting the requirement.

The Wintergreen shields are what you're looking for I guess, but I always laugh at the casters with Warrior weapons. Making themselves so much more ineffective.

Weapon swapping is the name of the game.
You get 4 slots so use them. Practice switching as needed. Here is my example(though it is not perfect and I am biased against e-denial, old meta not so vital anymore)
Slot 1 - Gladius -5E +5AL(I have one with health also and most recommend that-same skin as my HoD)
and a shield with +30 health and +10AL vs every damage type. I have quite a few R8 tactics max and a few R7 tactics 15al shields. If you don't meet the req you get 8AL from the shield plus its mods. If I am /w then my effective armor in my "low" set is 81 vs regular damage and 91 vs one specific type(subtract 8 if I'm not playing /w which is most the time honestly...)
Set 2 - HoD sword +5E/+20% Enchants(same skin as the gladius, the +30 health is on another char atm) and the shield. This set is my other hiding set and is probably not ideal. If you play a hybrid monk this would be better used for your other attributes 20/20 set. I use this set a lot to make it look like I'm on my low set(only a 10E difference but meh, old habits from old meta's)
Set 3 - Firey Flame spitter with +20% Enchants or the HoD sword and 20/20 prot offhand to get the best chance of a fast cast, recharge, and enchant enhancement.
Set 4 - High Energy, both wand and offhand with -1regen/+15Energy for emergency casting

The key is when you aren't casting to sit on a low set *just in case*. For things like RoF I don't weapon swap but for almost anything else I do.

Now then, on to the shields specifically. When you first see your opponents identify the damage type you will face most. Usually Slashing(Axe, Sword, Scythe, some daggers/hammers/axes), Blunt(hammer),Piercing(Bows, Daggers, one axe and hammer afaik), and Fire are the most common. The idea is to lower the pressure damage you receive between spikes.
In pve however I still recommend weapon swapping *to keep in practice* moreso than for the actual effect.
I probably just repeated what you read in the monk sticky but I hope it helps a little bit. The shield idea on casters is a trickle down from pvp.

It's really only about 'swapping, swapping, and more swapping' if your going to use a monk shield.

You should use all the elements/attack types for the shield, and just swap when your facing that kind of damage.

I personally would rather have a +1 (heals, divine, prot, smite) type of shield.
It seems most sensible.

(a +5 energy mod would be cool for shields tho )
